Faculty of Health Studies

The University of Bradford, Faculty of Health are a provider of high quality education and training, tailored to meet the needs of the healthcare workforce and service users.

Our students graduate equipped with the employability skills they need to succeed in a wide range of healthcare and associated professions, along with the foundations for lifelong learning.

We provide an extensive range of post-registration programmes for NHS practitioners and other healthcare professionals to develop their skills and update their knowledge.

The purpose-built Faculty of Health Studies building represents a £10 million investment in health at Bradford.

Our state of the art facilities provide learning environments and simulation equipment that mirrors those found in the NHS.

They are designed to provide the closest possible ‘real-life’ practical experience, under the guidance and supervision of our academic team of experienced healthcare professionals, allowing students to develop their clinical skills ahead of practice placements and employment in the health sector.

We focus on research themes that have a direct impact on the quality of care.

Our research is locally and internationally significant, undertaken in collaboration with NHS and other partners.

Our REF 2014 (Research Excellence Framework) results were outstanding:

  • 92% of our research classified as world leading or internationally excellent
  • In terms of impact, 100% of our research was judged as world leading or internationally excellent

  • Profile Photo of Uduak Archibong

    Uduak Archibong MBE

    Professor of Diversity, Director of the Centre for Inclusion and Diversity

    Provides strategic oversight for quality, diversity and inclusion at the University of Bradford. She is Visiting Professor at several international universities, a Fellow of the West African College of Nursing and a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing. Recognised as a top Inspirational Woman in Healthcare in the UK and Diversity and Inclusion thought leader, Uduak’s research, teaching and knowledge exchange activities have helped to shape workforce diversity and inclusive service delivery approaches. She is currently coordinating a large-scale European Commission funded action research project on gender equality, GENOVATE, across 7 European Universities.

  • Melissa Owens

    Lecturer in Nursing

    Dr Melissa Owens originally qualified as a nurse for people with learning disabilities, Melissa developed a particular interest in education and gained her Doctorate of Education in 2015.
    She has previously undertaken a number of research projects focusing on inter-professional learning and practice both within the university setting and in clinical practice. She also served two terms on the Board of CAIPE (the Centre for the Advancement for Interprofessional Education). She is also a Teaching Fellow with the Higher Education Academy. Melissa’s other research activities have also had an educational focus.

  • Gill Bow-Skill

    Expert in Experience

    For over 25 years I have worked or volunteered in the voluntary sector.
    My job was Regional Policy and Campaigns manager for a national charity; my patch the North of England (interim director).
    My job involved talking to MPs, Councillors and Health Professionals in variety of disciplines to help patients and groups access better services in various aspects of their lives. I have set up support groups and focus groups all around health, worked in Leeds University delivering workshops, and received simulated patient training. I also sit on a health and safety committee.

  • Gabrielle McClelland

    Senior lecturer and researcher in health

    Dr Gabrielle McClelland is a senior lecturer and researcher in health with extensive health services management experience and a professional background in both physical and mental health nursing. She has led inter professional health teams previously, including a statutory homeless team and a community drug and alcohol team and is currently located in the Faculty of Health Studies at the University of Bradford, England. Gabrielle is the Research and Knowledge Transfer lead (Nursing), and has a remit to build capacity and capability amongst staff. Gabrielle’s research interests and experience include: simulation-based education, equality and diversity, social inclusion, physical and mental health, substance misuse, sexual exploitation and systematic literature reviews.

    Amanda Briggs

    Position Nursing Lecturer and Clinical Skill & Simulation Lead for the School of Nursing and Healthcare Leadership.

    My research interests are using simulation based education as a teaching pedagogy in the domain of healthcare programmes. My teaching practice strives to illuminate links between physical and mental health and the impact of socioeconomics on individuals’ health and wellbeing. I am passionate about raising standards in nursing practice through education. I am an active dementia champion.
    In my current role as Lecturer/Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead I am responsible for organising delivery of clinical skills across healthcare programmes, for example nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and physicians associates ensuring skills are evidence based and meet regulatory professional standards. I am experienced in employing a number of pedagogies, including high fidelity simulation, technology enhanced learning and clinical skills teaching.

Health Professional Students

A cohort of health professional students were invited to be involved in the Sim-Versity project. Students were asked to self nominate based based on their identifying themselves as having a diverse characteristic. Four students volunteered to be part of the project team, Sharon, Gosia, Adam and Ellie. The negotiated role of these students was to work alongside all other project team members in developing, delivering and evaluating the project activities and outputs. Students in particular are keen to get involved in the dissemination aspect of the project and the face to face consultation groups with stakeholders

  • Adam McConnell

    Student

    At the point of becoming involved in the project Adam McConnell was in his first year of study an Adult Nursing degree. Adam is a dedicated student who is always open innovative ideas and new challenges. Before returning to education, Adam worked alongside people in a wide variety of care settings. Supporting people with varying needs and expectations has helped Adam to appreciate the importance recognising and promoting diversity.

  • Elinor Matthews

    Student

    Elinor is a current student studying for a Master’s in Public Health. Her areas of interest involve gender and sexuality specifically how treatment and care can be improved within these areas. Elinor has significant enthusiasm in identifying how innovative ideas can help to increase awareness of specific diversities and help health care professionals become more knowledgeable within these areas.

  • Sharon Kunaka

    Student

    Sharon Kunaka is a final year BSc Nursing student at the University of Bradford. Her research interests include global health and cultural wellness. She boasts five years of experience working with adults with cerebral palsy and learning difficulties. Sharon is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion within the health sector.

  • Malgorzata Drobniewska

    Student

    Malgorzata Drobniewska is a final year occupational therapy student with interest in research, diversty and social justice issues. Since her arrival from Poland in 2004, she has worked with people with learning disabilities and brain injury. She is passionate about creating opportunities for the disadvantaged groups in society.
